TRAVEL BASEBALL OVERVIEW

Doylestown Baseball offers a travel baseball program that is available to all registered players. Players are selected based on tryouts and teams are selected to play baseball at the highest competitive level for youth baseball. Participating in travel baseball requires a significant time commitment and an earnest dedication to learning and playing baseball, at both the individual and team level. Tryouts for spring teams are held in October-Early November. Tryouts for summer teams are held during the first two weeks of June.

Doylestown Baseball travel players are required to play in the spring in-house leagues. Play in the in-house league is intended to provide additional experience and game play where travel players can practice new skills, positions and techniques without the pressure of travel league game play. Travel players are expected to be good role models to non-travel players and should help non-travel players learn and enjoy the game wherever possible.

DAA Baseball offers exemptions to the requirement for Travel Players to play in-house for only ONE condition. An exemption to play in-house baseball is only available for 7th graders who play middle school baseball and qualify as 12U players. There are no other exemptions.

Doylestown Baseball will field ten junior baseball spring travel teams in the spring season: 8A, 8B, 9A, 9B, 10A, 10B, 11A, 11B, 12A, 12B.  All these teams will participate in the appropriate divisions in the Suburban Travel Baseball League (SBTL). The SBTL fields teams from Bucks and Montgomery counties as well as New Jersey. Typical travel times for regular league play are no more than 45 minutes from Doylestown.

During the spring, travel players will practice on one weekday evening and play SBTL games on Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons. These practices and games are in addition to in-house league games and practices.

During the summer, Doylestown Baseball typically fields 10 summer tournament teams at all those same age groups, along with one or two teams at the 7U age. The “A” teams from 8U – 12U are designated to participate in the Cal Ripken Baseball Tournament. The 7U and 8U – 12U “B” teams participate in various summer baseball tournaments.

It is important to recognize that skill levels and growth in youth baseball can vary significantly from year to year, so it is not uncommon for selected players to move from one roster to another within their age group for a given year as their skill levels are assessed.

Travel Baseball is intended to be financially self-sufficient. This means that players need to contribute towards uniforms, umpire fees, league fees, insurance, tournaments, and possible off season gym time for batting cages or practice. Coaches can give each team an expected cost for the season per player for that squad based on the expected practice and tournament schedule.
